Time with God

How important is it that I spend some time drawing near to God each day?  I have my salvation and am assured that my righteousness comes from Jesus and not myself.  Right?

The answer is very simple:

  1. When I became a disciple of Jesus Christ (a Christian), I made Him the Lord of my life. Luke 9:23-24
  2. That means that He is my teacher and example, my will should be surrendered to His. 1 John 2:6
  3. If I want answers about how I should live my life, I should look at Jesus’ example.

Jesus Prayed:

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”  - Luke 5:16

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”  - Mark 1:35

“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.”  -Luke 6:12

“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.””  -Matthew 26:36-42

“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.”  -Hebrews 5:7-9

He Read Scripture:

“Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.”  - Matthew 22:29

“Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; …”  - Matthew 21:42

“’The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?’”  -John 7:15

“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.  And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.  “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.”  -Luke 4:1-13

Jesus, the Son of God, didn’t even respond to Satan using His own wisdom!  He quoted Old Testament scripture!
